CD: Faithless, To All New Arrivals

(Columbia)

The hits compilation Forever Faithless sold a million and was in the chart for eight months. To All New Arrivals will struggle to match that - the Faithless formula, as deployed here (melodic riffs, euphoric breakdowns and, underpinning everything, Sister Bliss's rave-in-a-cathedral keyboards) just isn't weathering the noughties very well. It feels cruel to criticise such a relentlessly big-hearted record (opening track Bombs begins with an answerphone message: "If I don't get out of this, I just want you to know I really, really love you"), but it feels like a resurrection of their 1995 selves, when whirly effects and the bass rumblings of rapper Maxi Jazz were wildly fresh. Cat Power's tremulous vocal on A Kind of Peace works well, though, and Spiders, Crocodiles & Kryptonite incorporates the Cure's Lullaby to good effect.

You can't fault the trio's ability to talk to a crowd. But why, asks Garry Mulholland, do they speak in glib soundbites?
