CD: Rachmaninov: Symphony No 2; Vocalise: Budapest Festival Orchestra/ Fischer

(Channel Classics)

There is no shortage of first-rate versions of the most popular of Rachmaninov's three symphonies in the CD catalogue, but this is a fine addition, distinguished by its silky, transparent string tone, perfectly etched woodwind solos and never-obtrusive brass, and by Fischer's perfectly natural unfolding of every musical paragraph.

The Second Symphony has its longueurs, but Fischer keeps the music pressing forwards, never forgetting that there is a dark shadow behind even the most luscious melodies.
