Though Benjamin Zander's view of Mahler's Third Symphony consistently gives the music all the space it needs it does not occupy all three discs in this set: the third is given over to a discussion by the conductor, complete with music examples, of Mahler's most expansive work. Zander's performance commands respect; it is clearly the product of a deep understanding of the music, and the Philharmonia plays exceptionally well for him. The range of mood is very wide - this really is the one Mahler symphony that embraces a whole world of experience and feeling - and Zander registers them all.
