DVD: Duran Duran, Greatest

(EMI)

In the early 1980s, pop-video making was a cut-price activity yielding throwaway results. Here at least (for better or for worse) Duran Duran were prophetic trailblazers.

Their promos are grandly opulent affairs filmed against a backdrop of deserts, rain forests and Caribbean beaches. Stilted erotic imagery is rife, particularly in the infamous (and here, uncensored) video for Girls On Film, which has all the taste and style of an Athena picture postcard.

As for the music, well, it's Duran Duran really - a handful of catchy choruses in a morass of 1980s production clatter. The two-disc set features a variety of hidden extra features. If you love Duran Duran enough, you may just muster the patience to find them.

Duran Duran – review
On the strength of the new songs premiered here to an indulgent crowd, Duran Duran's new album will not add to their legacy as one of the great singles bands, writes Ian Gittins
