Gavin and Stacey set for US remake

ABC network to produce own version of BBC's hit romantic comedy, but script will not be by James Corden and Ruth Jones

The US network ABC is to remake the hit BBC comedy Gavin and Stacey for American audiences.

The comedy, about a boy from England and a girl from Wales who fall in love over the phone, will follow in the footsteps of a raft of other British shows to be remade for the US, including The Office and Life on Mars.

ABC has ordered a pilot of the show, which will be made by the BBC's commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, alongside two other new comedies, according to US trade title Variety.

However, the Stateside version of Gavin and Stacey will not be written by its British creators, James Corden and Ruth Jones.

Stacy Traub, whose credits include Notes From the Underbelly, and Hayes Jackson, who has previously written According to Jim, will take on writing duties for the pilot.

ABC has also ordered a pilot of 18 Years, about a young couple who must adjust to life as parents, from Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith, writers of The King of Queens; and a sitcom about a thirtysomething woman who is promoted to a job managing a group of twentysomething workers, from Donald Todd, executive producer of Samantha Who?
