The BBC3 comedy Gavin & Stacey will return for a third series, its creators Ruth Jones and James Corden have revealed.

The pair gave fans the news live on air while Jones was broadcasting an open-air edition of her BBC Wales radio programme yesterday.

They made the announcement to a large crowd that had gathered for the broadcast in Barry Island, where the series is partly set, BBC Online reported.

"I'm in if you are," Corden said to Jones while both were on stage.

"Shall we do it?" Jones responded and the pair shook hands in front of a cheering crowd, some of whom carried placards saying: "Third series please".

Corden said he hoped that the third series would not disappoint fans.

The show has grown in popularity since it first aired on BBC3 in 2007 and a Christmas special will be broadcast on Christmas Eve on BBC1, following a repeat of the second series on Friday nights on the channel recently.

Gavin & Stacey follows the relationship between a young woman from Barry, south Wales, played by Joanna Page, and a young man from Essex, played by Mathew Horne. Jones plays Stacey's best friend, Nessa, while Corden plays Gavin's best friend, Smithy.

Jones has hosted the Sunday Brunch programme on BBC Radio Wales for the past 12 weeks.

Tidy US reviews for Gavin & Stacey

BBC3's hit sitcom Gavin & Stacey has its American premiere tonight on BBC America. And if the advance publicity is anything to go by, it will be as successful in the States as it was in the UK. The show elicits a number of glowing reviews in major US newspapers today, with the New York Times calling it the "most endearing comedy about love" since Sex and the City, while the Los Angeles Times says it was a "gem of a show". The LA Times goes on to say it is a "bit grubby by American standards", although apparently this is a good thing. "Nessa and Smitty [sic] are quite deliciously grubby, actually," the paper says. Praise indeed.
