Unearthing Mysteries | File On 4

Last April German officials presented the Russian president Vladimir Putin with an elaborately inlaid chest and a tiny fragment of amber. They were apparently all that's left of the Amber Room , an 11-foot square, bejewelled chamber which the Prussian king gave Peter the Great in 1716. It remained at Tsarskoye Selo, the imperial residence near St Petersburg, until Nazi troops packed it up as loot in 1941. No one has seen it since. But, as Aubrey Manning reports in Unearthing Mysteries (11.0am, Radio 4), they are still looking.

The eccentric workings of the European single market are examined by Mark Whitaker for File On 4 (8.0pm, Radio 4). One of the community's key policies is designed to spread the richest regions' wealth to struggling peripheral areas. Yet a British government scheme to attract private investment to the north-east has been ruled illegal. It would, the commission claimed, give some of the enterprises there an unfair advantage.

Tonight, Nicholas Tresilian celebrates the music of Leonard Bernstein in Classic FM In Concert (9.0pm, Classic FM). Bernstein's best-known works, of course, are such lively entertainments as West Side Story and Candide (the overture to which opens the evening). But his more serious output is also represented. The New York Philharmonic offers the Chichester Psalms followed by the Bournemouth Symphony's version of Symphony No 2, based on WH Auden's poem The Age of Anxiety.
