The Guardian welcomes Dana Canedy as managing editor of Guardian US

Dana Canedy has been appointed managing editor of Guardian US. She starts on April 24.

Canedy, a distinguished journalist and editor, is an experienced senior executive in the country’s leading news and publishing organisations.

Canedy spent more than 20 years at The New York Times, where she held a number of roles, including national correspondent, bureau chief, and senior editor.

From 2017 to 2020, Canedy served as Administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, where she oversaw all aspects of the prestigious awards in journalism, arts and letters. She was the first woman and person of color to lead the organisation in its 100 year history.

Most recently, Canedy served as Senior Vice President and Publisher at Simon & Schuster. During her tenure at Simon & Schuster, she oversaw the successful publication of numerous award-winning books.

Dana is a founding board member of the Digital Diversity Network, a non-profit trade association whose mission is to advance diversity and inclusion in the leadership and ownership ranks of the digital media industry.

Canedy is also the author of the New York Times-bestselling memoir “A Journal for Jordan,” about a journal written by her fiancé to their newborn son before he was killed in combat in Iraq.

At the Guardian, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist will ensure the smooth running of news operations across a wide range of functions and ensure the continued advancement of the Guardian’s editorial mission in the American market.

US Editor Betsy Reed said:

“Dana brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this critical role in our newsroom, as well as enthusiasm for our mission and a clear vision of our potential. I could not be more thrilled that she is joining us.”

Dana Canedy said:

“I am honored to join the Guardian US and stand alongside the talented journalists and staff who work to provide US news to readers here and abroad. I have long admired the Guardian’s values, and look forward to building on its reputation for fearless, independent journalism.”

Guardian US has 85 members of its editorial staff across its bureaus in New York, Washington DC, and Los Angeles. In 2022, Guardian US averaged 40 million unique visitors per month. The publication currently has over 215,000 recurring supporters and digital subscribers in the US.
