European roundup: Icardi scores late PSG winner after Messi substituted

  • Paris Saint-Germain recover to beat Lyon 2-1
  • Juventus 1-1 Milan; Real Madrid defeat Valencia

A late Mauro Icardi strike earned Paris Saint-Germain a last-gasp 2-1 home victory against Lyon, with Lionel Messi making limited impact on his Parc des Princes debut.

Icardi headed home from Kylian Mbappé’s cross four minutes into stoppage time after Neymar had levelled with a controversial penalty after Lucas Paqueta’s second-half opener, as the leaders maintained their perfect record, with 18 points from six games.

Messi, in his third appearance for the capital side, hit the woodwork but failed to score and was substituted in the 76th minute, to his apparent bemusement.

Lyon are ninth with eight points while Marseille moved up to second on 13 points from five games after a convincing 2-0 victory against Rennes.

“It’s a really important victory against a very good Lyon side,” said PSG’s coach, Mauricio Pochettino. “The team showed their character after conceding the goal and that’s the most important thing tonight. Now we need to work a lot to find our balance.”

Ante Rebic’s late header earned Milan a 1-1 draw at Juventus in Serie A on Sunday, leaving Massimiliano Allegri’s side still searching for a first league win of the season.

Juve’s Álvaro Morata scored for the third successive match after just four minutes to give the hosts a dream start, with the Spaniard racing clear before finishing. They remained firmly on top in the first half against injury-hit Milan, who were missing Zlatan Ibrahimovic among others, with Paulo Dybala going close to a second goal from distance.

Further Juve chances came and went and their wastefulness in the final third cost them all three points as Croatian Rebic climbed highest to equalise from a corner in the 76th minute.

Milan are on 10 points, sitting behind leaders Internazionale on goal difference while Juventus are in 18th place with only two points from their first four games.

José Mourinho suffered his first defeat since returning to coach in Italy as his Roma side were beaten 3-2 by Verona in a thrilling Serie A encounter. A stunning volley from the Verona captain, Marco Faraoni, proved decisive, ending Roma’s 100% start to the Serie A season while earning his side their first win of the campaign.

“We didn’t play very well, we didn’t adapt well to their way of playing,” Mourinho told DAZN. “We lost many individual duels. I need the videos, I need a few hours to better understand what happened.“

Danilo Cataldi’s late equaliser salvaged a point for Lazio in a 2-2 draw at home to Cagliari, while Sampdoria and Spezia earned 3-0 and 2-1 away victories at Empoli and Venezia respectively.

Real Madrid attackers Vinícius Jr and Karim Benzema scored within the space of three minutes deep in the second half to propel their side to a 2-1 win at Valencia in La Liga after being outplayed for most of the game.

The hosts went ahead in the 66th minute with a thumping low strike from the forward Hugo Duro, who spent last season on loan with Madrid. Real levelled with a deflected strike from Vinícius in the 86th minute and then the Brazilian turned provider, crossing for Benzema to head home the winner in the 88th minute.

Valencia would have gone top had they held on for the win but instead Carlo Ancelotti’s Real side lead the standings with 13 points from five games.

“It’s never easy to come here especially when you concede the first goal but we never gave in, we kept working and kept persisting,” said Vinícius. “We’ve got a great result here thanks to the work of the whole team and things are coming off for us right now.”

Erling Haaland scored twice as Borussia Dortmund emerged with a hard-fought 4-2 win over Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Norwegian grabbed Dortmund’s second goal in the 24th minute and secured the result in the 83rd just after Union scored to set up what looked like a nervy finale.

Dortmund’s third league win in a row lifted them to 12 points, one behind the leaders, Bayern Munich, who thrashed Bochum 7-0 on Saturday.

Wolfsburg slipped to second place, on goal difference, after drawing 1-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt, the first points they have dropped after four straight league wins this season.
