England 1-2 Iceland: Euro 2016 player ratings for last-16 knockout game

England were humiliated after a mistake from Joe Hart and defensive lapses, but Iceland’s Ragnar Sigurdsson, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Kari Arnason were magnificent

England

Joe Hart 3

At fault for Iceland’s second goal when failing to get a firm hand to a tame shot. A point blank save from a second-half bicycle kick made few amends after he had set defeat in motion.

Kyle Walker 5

Showed initial desire to get forward, fizzing an early cross behind Iceland’s defence but was then needed in defence and was lacking. Lost Ragnar Sigurdsson for Iceland’s opener.

Gary Cahill 5

Was left chasing shadows when Iceland carved open England’s defence with a series of quick passes before their second goal. Often appeared several seconds behind the play.

Chris Smalling 5

Failed to organise the defence, was bullied by players he should have dominated and appeared overwhelmed by the situation. Was as ineffective as Cahill.

Danny Rose 5

His attempts to overlap Raheem Sterling were often thwarted by the muscular Johann Gudmundsson and Birkir Saevarsson and he remained peripheral in attack and defence.

Dele Alli 5

Wasted a good chance midway through the second half when he shinned the ball over the bar. Ran hard all night but rarely into good positions.

Eric Dier 4

Culpable in the buildup to both Iceland goals. He did not deal with Aron Gunnarsson’s long throw then allowed Gylfi Sigurdsson space before the second. Subbed at half-time for Jack Wilshere, who did not fare much better.

Wayne Rooney 5

Scored England’s penalty but, two minutes later, could not prevent Kari Arnason’s flick on to set up Iceland’s first. Passing became increasingly erratic and lacked penetration.

Daniel Sturridge 6

Appeared to be England’s most threatening player in the first half but his lively passing around the box was not matched by end product when he broke behind the defence.

Harry Kane 4

His evening was summed up by the free-kick he hit over the penalty area and straight out of play with three minutes remaining. His touch was leaden, his radar off and his passing poor.

Raheem Sterling 3

The value of Sterling, on the evidence of this, is in decline here as across the rest of the world. Won England’s penalty in the first half and was entirely invisible thereafter.

Iceland

Hannes Halldorsson 7

Brought down Raheem Sterling for England’s first-half penalty but was then solid when called upon. Largely left to deal with long‑range shots which rarely troubled him.

Birkir Saevarsson 7

Was beaten for pace by Sterling in the opening minutes which led to England’s penalty but then kept the England winger quiet. Hit a sharp shot on 72 minutes which fizzed over the bar.

Kari Arnason 8

Provided the flick on which led to Ragnar Sigurdsson’s opening goal and was a physical and impressive presence in defence. Rarely looked troubled by England’s attack.

Ragnar Sigurdsson 9

Headed home Iceland’s opening goal then hit a spectacular bicycle kick 10 minutes into the second half and was unlucky not to score. A rock at the back, he was Iceland’s best player.

Ari Skulason 7

Was effective at keeping Kyle Walker quiet and marked Daniel Sturridge well enough to prevent the England forward from providing any telling passes.

Johann Gudmundsson 7

Tracked Raheem Sterling effectively and provided a muscular presence on the right wing which kept Danny Rose pushed back into defence.

Gylfi Sigurdsson 8

Pulled strings in the Iceland midfield immaculately, providing sharp passing and quality balls from which his team scored their second goal.

Aron Gunnarsson 8

His long throws were a constant threat and set Iceland up for their opening goal. Defensively robust in midfield, he provided the ballast alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson’s guile.

Birkir Bjarnason 6

The least visible of all the Iceland players in terms of his performance but he was still an attacking enough threat on the left to push Kyle Walker back.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson 8

Scored past Joe Hart with a tame effort but it was still good enough to beat the England keeper. It was his first shot on target in the entire tournament.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson 7

As happy to defend as to attack in what was an all-action performance for his team. At one point he was in the right back slot, tracking Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli.
