Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that they have agreed a deal to sign the Spain striker Roberto Soldado from Valencia.
The 28-year-old scored 80 goals in his 146 appearances for the Mestalla club and André Villas-Boas had made him one of his primary summer targets after the arrival of the Brazilian midfielder Paulinho last month.
"We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Valencia for the transfer of Roberto Soldado subject to medical," said a statement from Tottenham on Thursday morning. The transfer fee is believed to be £26m, which would be a club record for the north London club.
Soldado has won 11 caps for Spain and has scored six goals for his country, with his most recent appearances coming in the Confederations Cup in Brazil in June.
He joined Valencia from Getafe in 2010, after impressing with a tally of 29 goals in 60 league appearances.
Soldado began his career at Real Madrid, where he scored 63 goals in 120 league appearances for the B side, Real Madrid Castilla, also featuring on 16 occasions for the first team before moving to nearby Getafe in 2008.
