Rangers have agreed a £3m fee with Burnley to sign the Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty. The deal will see Alan Gow move in the other direction. "We have received a very good offer from Rangers - a deal worth close to £4m when you include Alan [Gow]," said the Burnley manager Owen Coyle. "Ultimately, from the fans point of view, Kyle wanted to leave the club after saying he felt it was time to move on."
Lafferty scored five goals in 40 appearances for Burnley last season, and is the third striker Walter Smith has signed this summer, along with Kenny Miller and Andrius Velicka, who agreed a move to Ibrox yesterday. Today's move raises questions over the future of Kris Boyd, Daniel Cousin and Jean-Claude Darcheville, who were all used in rotation last season.
Lafferty, already a Northern Ireland international at the age of 20, had also attracted interest from Rangers' cross-city rivals Celtic, who today announced that striker Scott McDonald has signed a new five-year deal with the club.
Rangers have confirmed Lafferty has travelled to Glasgow for contract talks with the club's chief executive Martin Bain.
