Do the loco-motion: Kylie Minogue joins The Rock's 3D earthquake movie

The singer and sometime actor is to take a supporting role in a disaster film, starring ex-wrestler Dwayne Johnson and shooting in Australia, about an earthquake in San Francisco

Kylie Minogue will make a rare big screen appearance in the disaster movie San Andreas, reports Variety. The film stars Dwayne Johnson as a helicopter pilot vying to rescue his daughter following a catastrophic San Francisco earthquake which measures 9.0 on the Richter scale.

Minogue will play an unspecified supporting character, only her third dramatic role (barring voice work and cameos) on the big screen in the past decade. The Australian singer appeared in 2012's Holy Rollers and Jack and Diane, but remains best known on film for her cameo as the Green Fairy in Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge in 2001 and – even further back – her lead role in 1989's The Delinquents at the height of her Neighbours fame.

The film San Andreas – the title presumably references California's famous 800-mile fault line – will be shot mostly in Australia, except for a week in San Francisco to establish location. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island's Brad Peyton will direct from a screenplay by the writers of hit supernatural horror The Conjuring, Carey and Chad Hayes.
