Buy it, Sam: Casablanca piano goes up for auction

The piano from Rick's Cafe in the classic romance Casablanca will be auctioned at Bonhams this autumn

It's one of the most famous pianos in film – the one played by Sam in Rick's Cafe in Casablanca, triggering dewy-eyed reminiscence in Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Now hopeless (and wealthy) romantics can recreate the scene for themselves, as it is being put up for auction at Bonhams this autumn.

The piano is expected to sell for a seven-figure sum in New York in November, after another piano from the film, used in flashback scenes in Paris, was sold for $602,500 in 2012. The Rick's piano is still very much playable, having been used in a concert of Max Steiner's music for Casablanca at the Hollywood Bowl in 2006.

There are many other Casablanca-related lots, including the interior and exterior doors to Rick's Cafe, passports and papers created for the film, and the final draft of the screenplay. Catherine Williamson of Bonhams has called it "one of the most significant film memorabilia collections still in private hands".

Elsewhere in the There's No Place Like Hollywood memorabilia auction, you can pick up costumes including ones worn by Rita Hayworth in Gilda, Barbara Streisand in Yentl, and a flying monkey in The Wizard of Oz. The items will go on preview in Los Angeles from 6-9 November, and in New York from 20-24 November.

A record was set for a movie prop at a Bonhams auction last year, when the falcon statuette from The Maltese Falcon, another Bogart movie, was sold for more than $4m.
