Thor's Chris Hemsworth not happy about topless scene

Superhero star reluctant to take shirt off for sequence designed to reveal character's rippling muscles

Thor: The Dark World star Chris Hemsworth was reluctant to remove his shirt for an excruciating scene in the comic book sequel in which the Norse god shows off his rippling muscles.

The new superhero tale from Disney-owned Marvel studios features an early cutaway where Thor divests himself of upper body clothing and stands gleaming in the Asgardian moonlight. Hemsworth told MTV he had to be convinced by Marvel supremo Joss Whedon that the segue, which recalls Daniel Craig's musclebound "Speedo moment" in James Bond movie Casino Royale, made sense in the context of the superhero's need to clean off the bloodstains of a recent battle.

"That [scene] kind of came from Joss actually," revealed the Australian actor. "He just said that there needed to be something romantic in there. Then he said, 'Chris, get your shirt off.'

"I said, 'Well, I don't know. What's the why? What are we doing?' The justification was that it was him coming home from battle, washing blood off his hands. It is what it is. How to weigh into that without sounding like an idiot?"

Hemsworth also said he lives in a protein-heavy diet in order to stay in shape for life as Thor. "I basically overfeed on protein and endless amounts of chicken breast and steak and fish and vegetables and brown rice," he said.

Thor: The Dark World, which is directed by Game of Thrones' Alan Taylor, sees the prince of Asgard teaming up with his untrustworthy brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to take down an even greater threat: Christopher Eccleston's nefarious Malekith. Set largely in London, the film hits UK cinemas tomorrow and Australia a day later. The well-reviewed followup to 2011's Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor is due in the US for 8 November.
