Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz are to star together for the first time in 12 years in Gabriele Muccino's A Little Game Without Consequence.
The comedy drama centres on a couple who decide to play a practical joke on their friends by pretending to split up, only to find that no-one thought they made a particularly great pairing in any case.
It will be the first screen collaboration between Carrey and Diaz since 1994's The Mask, in which Diaz was a 21-year-old unknown making her Hollywood debut.
The script is adapted from a French film which itself was sourced from a play by Jean Dell and Gerald Sibleyras.
Consequence will be the second feature length film from Italian director Muccino to be made in English, following this year's Will Smith vehicle The Pursuit of Happyness. The shoot will take place in New York in October.
Diaz is currently recording her part as Princess Fiona in the forthcoming third Shrek film, while Carrey has just finished work on the drama The Number 23, in which he co-stars with Sideways' Virginia Madsen.
