Two Towers out of make-up Oscar running

Only Frida and The Time Machine will compete for the best make-up Oscar, meaning that the cosmetic wizardry in The Hours and The Lord of the Rings have already been dismissed

There is normally stiff competition in all the Oscar categories, but this year the award for best make-up is down to just two already. Only Frida and The Time Machine have emerged as contenders, when the pre-award tally is usually seven.

This means that the likes of The Hours and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers have been dismissed outright.

The acting chair of the Academy's make-up rules committee, Leonard Engelman, said "I think everybody was surprised. But what we have to remember is we're only looking for one - that one outstanding film". Having just two movies to choose from should make that task even easier.
