Chicago. Having split up with his girlfriend the previous night, Rob (John Cusack) trudges into work at his record store Championship Vinyl. His assistant, the mild-mannered Dick (Todd Louiso), is already listening to a tape. Rob looks puzzled.

"What's this?"

"It's the new Belle And Sebastian," Dick enthuses. "Do you like it?"

Before Rob can answer, his other assistant Barry (Jack Black) strides in. He stops in his path, taking in the tune.

"What the fuck is this?"

"It's the new Belle And Sebastian," replies Dick.

"It's the record we've been listen ing to and enjoying, Barry," continues Rob.

"Well that's unfortunate," Barry mutters. "BECAUSE IT SUCKS ASS!"

Barry takes off the tape, and replaces it with another - Katrina And The Waves' Walking On Sunshine. He begins to dance around the shop, clapping and singing along. Rob and Dick look on miserably. Rob snaps.

"Turn it off, Barry."

"Sorry," bellows Barry, "it won't go any louder."

Rob switches the tape off himself.

"OK, I was just trying to cheer us up. So go ahead - put on your old sad bastard music. See if I care."

Rob eyes him across the counter.

"I don't want to hear old sad bastard music, Barry."

He stares at his feet.

"I just want something I can ignore."
