The Surrey Institute of Art and Design, University College is the country's only independent college specialising in art, design, media and communication. It runs more than 30 different programmes, including: animation, fashion, graphic design and journalism (students' work can be viewed in the student showcase.
The institute has two campuses - in Farnham and Epsom. Epsom is closer to London and has a lively town centre, with a variety of pubs, bars and eateries, and a theatre. The Farnham campus, meanwhile, is situated in 16 acres of grounds beneath Farnham Castle, close to the town centre. The student union offers good entertainment in both campuses, with music and cheap drinks.
There is accommodation on both campus, although priority is given to those living furthest away or who have disabilities. The institute has produced an accommodation guide for students not getting a room in halls.
An award-winning student village at Farnham was opened in 1996, while Epsom's halls of residence were completed last year. Campus accommodation is reasonably priced, compared to living in privately rented flats in the area.
The institute's alumni include interior designer Linda Barker and Oscar-winning animator Michael Dudok de Wit.
