Butetown story told from a taxi

A new theatre performance from National Theatre Wales will take audience members on a trip around Butetown

A new theatre production which takes audience members on a taxi ride around Butetown is being prepared for the New Year.

The Soul Exchange – a site-specific performance from National Theatre Wales – tells the story of a young man's search to find his father in the historic Butetown ward.

The company's tenth production since it launched last year – NTW have impressed critics with their rare blend of fresh theatre and new locations for performances steeped in Welsh culture and history.

This latest announcement looks set to keep expectations high – with the taxi tour around Butetown and a cast which mixes actors and members of the local community.

The show promises to explore the myths and truths of Tiger Bay – beginning at Wales Millennium Centre the audience will travel through a procession of taxis hearing the story of John who has never met his father.

The journey, and performance, will end at the Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay – where the first million-pound deal was signed – where audience and cast will pose for a commemorative photograph.

The Soul Exchange, directed by Kully Thiarai and designed byJane Linz Roberts will be staged from 27 January. Radio Cardiff DJ Keith Murrell is the music director for the producation and other artists include Welsh photogragher Rhodri Jones and Welsh-born Gavin Porter who run butetown.org.
