British soldier killed by mine explosion

One killed and three injured as vehicle hits mine during a routine patrol in southern Afghanistan

A British soldier was killed and three others were injured when their vehicle hit a mine during a routine patrol in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said yesterday.

All four soldiers were members of the Household Cavalry Regiment, the same one as Prince Harry, who spent 10 weeks serving in Helmand province before he was withdrawn in February after news of his deployment leaked out. The fatality in Helmand on Friday brings the number of British personnel to die in Afghanistan since 2001 to 95.

An Afghan was also injured during Friday's incident, which happened as the soldiers were providing protection for a routine patrol in the Nowzad area of northern Helmand.

The casualties were taken to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) medical facilities at Camp Bastion, the main British base in Helmand, where one was pronounced dead.

Next of kin have been informed and the deceased soldier is expected to be named by the MoD today. The other soldiers were being treated for their injuries. The troops were in a Spartan armoured reconnaissance vehicle. It's not known if the mine was planted by the Taliban or left from the Soviet era.
