A British soldier has been killed by a bomb blast in southern Iraq, the Ministry of Defence said last night.

The soldier, from the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, died of injuries sustained following an attack. Three others were slightly injured by the explosion just north of Basra.

Although the dead man's immediate next of kin have been informed, his name is being withheld until his wider family has been told, a ministry spokesman said.

'I was deeply saddened to hear of this incident,' the armed forces minister Adam Ingram said. 'My thoughts and sympathies are with the families of all those concerned at this difficult time.'

The death takes to 104 the number of British forces deaths since hostilities began - 79 of them died in action, the others in accidents or of natural causes.
