Florence Pugh releases first songs as singer-songwriter

The Best Part and I Hate Myself are performed by her character in A Good Person, written and directed by Zach Braff

Florence Pugh has released her first performances as a singer-songwriter, which are included on the soundtrack to her new film A Good Person.

The British actor has written and performed two songs: the slow ambient ballad The Best Part, and the self-lacerating piano-driven number I Hate Myself. Each are presented in the film as being sung by her character, Allison, a promising musician whose career is set back by personal tragedy.

“I wrote these songs for my character Allison in the movie to perform, but also as a way to process and digest her mindset and her low headspace,” Pugh explained. “It was unbelievably helpful and hard; I wanted a song to reflect the self-hatred she had for herself in a way that the audience can truly understand.”

A Good Person co-stars Morgan Freeman and is written and directed by Pugh’s ex-partner Zach Braff. The soundtrack also features songs by the Velvet Underground and Fenne Lily, and the score was written by the National’s Bryce Dessner, also known for his scores to films such as The Revenant and C’mon C’mon.

Pugh recently starred in dramas The Wonder and Don’t Worry Darling, and will next be seen in a slate of high-profile Hollywood projects: Christoper Nolan’s Oppenheimer, the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune remake, and the Marvel ensemble movie Thunderbolts.
