LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and Pat Mahoney have formed a new band, according to the dance-punk frontman. And instead of beats, samples and synths, the group trades on something different - classic rock.
"It's a rock record, a classic rock record," Murphy told BBC 6 Music. Murphy plays bass and Mahoney plays drums, while friends Scott Wells and Paul Sprangers fill out the rest of the as-yet-untitled project.
"They don't have a name yet," Murphy said. "They have a lot of names that we argue back and forth about. I think they try to come up with the worst names possible just to wind me up."
There are also contributions from members of Hercules and Love Affair, Murphy said, which opens up the teeny-tiny possibility that Antony Hegarty will play rhythm guitar.
The group is already recording and Murphy expects a release in the "first half" of 2009.
Murphy and Mahoney are playing a DJ set on Friday at London's Matter club. Other acts include the Juan MacLean, Morgan Geist and Optimo. No word on whether the classic rock fans will try to sneak Cheap Trick and Emerson, Lake & Palmer into their set.
