Playing the guitar: Bernard Butler

Bernard Butler

What inspired you to play the guitar?

The Smiths - Johnny Marr.

What was the first song you learned?

Hand In Glove by the Smiths. I learned every Smiths record - that music signifies my whole adolescence.

Favourite guitar?

Gibson 355. I rented one the first chance I got. I like Les Paul guitars too and used one to make the first Suede album.

Favourite chord?

A minor - quite sad, but vicious too.

Is the appearance of the guitar important?

What it looks like is more important than sound. It has to fit with you. It should reflect you and your outlook on life. Like a great pair of shoes, it's something you choose to wear.
